Faroe Islands, thank you!

Featured

It might sound a little corny saying thank you every time we do a concert, but this time it just seems extra right. It’s the second year in a row that we were welcomed back to Faroe Islands, to be a part of “Korstævnet”, a yearly choir summit for local singers with or without a choir.

We just got back from the beautiful Faroe Islands, and it is truly somewhere special to go. First of all the nature and sights of the islands are something we danes rarely see. Tall mountains and big rocks, compared to our fields and flat country. Second the people of Faroe Islands just seem a little nicer than the average “strangers”, well actually that’s not quite true, for the people who tend to invite us, tend to be really nice people – but then again, this time we had traditional Faroe dancing. Last but not least does the Faroe Islands have a rarely well preserved choir tradition, which means that when it comes to singing traditional tunes together – they do this in 3-4 voices without any songbook or sheet music. What a contrast to the traditional danish family get-together.

Let’s groove

Jim Daus Hjernøe was invited to be one of the instructors of the choir summit. The choir singers were taught three groovy vocal arrangements, in true Voxnorth style. Two of the pieces with percussion and beatbox, one tune had a body stomp element, one had a small improvised part and the last tune was lead by the two Voxnorth singers Natasja and Claus, in a beautiful duet version of Peter Gabrials “Don’t give up” backed up by the 150 local voices. Such a beautiful experience.

Friday night was Voxnorth night, we gave a full-size concert with the best from our catalogue and saturday afternoon the choir summit ended in one big concert with all the tunes learned at the summit plus a little Voxnorth feature.

Who can say No to a party?

It is a tradition of the “Korstævnet” to end with a party, and this was not any different this year. Great food, great beer, great music, great singing, great speeches and not least great people.

All in all there’s not much else to say than: Thank you!

Hope to see you all again.

Voxnorth singer first with a degree in choral improv

Conducting the audience

In Voxnorth we are proud to have some extraordinary singers with various exciting backgrounds – recently Kristian Skårhøj became the first European to graduate from a conservatory with a major in “Improvisation with vocal ensembles”. Congratulations!

Kristian Skårhøj – baritone member of Voxnorth since 2008 – has been singing since he was a child. As he grew up in a religious home, singing was part of his everyday. Before dinner, at bedtime, by the piano in the living room and at church twice a week. He grew up with choral music and the desire to add hamornies to tunes and – according to his Mom – made up his first real song by the age of 4.

Meeting Bobby McFerrin

It wasn’t until a very special night in 2003 though that he discovered improvised vocal music for the first time when he attended his first concert with Bobby McFerrin and Voicestra. Kristian explains: “I was sitting in the audience with a presenceness  and a sense of being a part of a very special – almost sacred – moment. The music just seemed to stream out of McFerrin and the singers, constantly in the progress and yet beautifully alive. It was just right there! And it was fresh and brand new. For almost two hours they kept making wonderful music, and ones they left the stage it just lived on inside me. I left the concert hall singing! A new world of music had opened to me.”

Five years later Kristian came by an unprecedented and unique chance by making his master thesis in collaboration with Linda Goldstein, Bobby McFerrin and Voicestra: “It was a total dream come true for me! First they granted me access to numerous concert recordings from 1997 concerts – and then I got invited to join the upcoming 2008 tour with McFerrin and the group for 10 days in the US! Eventhough it was 10 o’clock at night and I was all alone, I started jumping and screaming in wild exaltation when I got the notice!”

Kristian and some kind of hand gesture?

The master thesis became an unprecedented collection of transcriptions and analysises of McFerrins works. 160 pages of transcribed circle songs and 40 pages of analysis. But not only did Kristian make an intellectual approach to McFerrins unique improv style – this was also the starting point of his own vocal ensemble with improv as its focal point. He named the project Songs of the Moment, and today this project is still one of Kristians major musical projects.

When asked about the difference between Voxnorth and Songs of the Moment Kristian tells: “In the beginning Songs of the Moment was strictlty based on improv music, and the concerts were fully improvised. Eventhough I nowadays also use the ensemble to perform my written choral compositions – like The Pentecost Oratorio – the main element of the group is to make improvised music as an art form. I take these skills that I developed with Songs of the Moment and I bring them into the Voxnorth setting. For some time I was being given a blank space in the Voxnorth setlist every gig to make up a circle song, and it was a beautiful moment to connect with the singers by facing the unknown together. Not just that though – Jim [Musical director of Voxnorth] always kept bringing all these new fancy hand signals into the music! I was standing there working on something, and all of a sudden the music just went BOOM because Jim had made the whole group follow him on some new idea!”

Getting advanced

After graduating in 2008 with a Master in Music, Kristian decided to fully commit to vocal improv and he was admitted for the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Music progam at The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus in 2009. On January 8 this year, he made his ‘debut concert’ as a certified circle song and improv singer/composer – in front of almost 400 people who had gathered in The Music Hall Aarhus. “It was one of my most grateful moments! Not only had I had the opportunity to work with an all star group of beautiful singers who also were my friends, not only did they give us two full days in The Rythmic Hall for the rehearsals but when the concert started we faced an almost full house! 400 people is a big audience for a vocal concert – but 400 people at an all improvised vocal concert? That’s a heck of a lot!!”

The concert was a huge success and Kristian fulfilled his dawning dream from 2003. He made a beautiful, varied and very present concert, making up the music from start to end in an organic flow. Circle songs, duet, trios and full jam improvs all in a mix. Best of all. It had beautifully stunning moments as well as engaging humorous stage presence which captivated the audience and one would be suprised if some did not leave the hall humming and singing.

Getting ready for Svendborg

It’s time for yet another Voxnorth update before we hit the road and take over Svendborg at two concerts the 8th of march (for details check our Calendar).

We are always working hard to improve our set. Recently we took in two new pieces in the set: One which is a song written by our own Jim Daus Hjernøe and Astrid Vang-Pedersen, and the other we will keep a secret a little more time, let’s just say that Jesper Falch is man behind the music.

The new tune by Jim and Astrid is called “Find the way”, and is a beautiful yet powerful song about believe in possibility of change. We made a little video for you, so you can see for yourself.

We are looking so much forward to presenting our latest additions to the set for you in Svendborg!

Merry Christmas from Voxnorth

Actually we have a little christmas surprise for you. This fall Voxnorth visited the danish producer Søren Bundgaard in his studio and recorded 2 songs for Kirsten Siggaards new christmas album.

On the tunes Silent Night and Lille Messias, the choir arrangements is made by Kristian Skårhøj and Mads Tilst. Kirsten Siggaard sings several duets in the record, ex. with Poul Potts. We really it has become a beautiful and intense record, all gathered by the charming voice of Kirsten Siggard.

You can listen to the record here

Merry Christmas everyone, we look much forward to telling you all about our plans for 2012 with contains more traveling and a lot more singing. See you in 2012.

Thank you Copenhagen!

Our final concert in Copenhagen is finally over, what a ride, Nørre Gymnasium, thank you for an amazing crowd.

Taking over Copenhagen

Featured

We are looking very much forward to seeing you all in the area of Copenhagen very soon!

In concerts, workshops and masterclasses at 4 different performances, we will demonstrate and incorporate our own philosophy on pushing the boundaries of choral music for the 21st Century.

This comes to show in the different kinds of music we do, e.g. the choral suite “The Four Loves” by Roger Treece and improvisations that characterize a Voxnorth concert, varying from circlesongs or solfeggi (led by a singer/conductor) to freer, more collective forms such as trio improvisation.

Singing with Mr. Bobby McFerrin

At this year’s Aarhus Vocal Festival Voxnorth had the great honor of performing with vocal improvisation guru Bobby McFerrin (U.S.). A truly magical experience!

The concert / masterclass took place in Musikhuset’s Symphonic Hall which was filled to the brim with vocal enthusiasts from around the world. Bobby (who became famous with “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”) invented the concept of Circlesongs, and with VoxNorth as his choir, he gave examples of how he improvises these songs in the moment. Bobby’s talk of his experience with a.o. presence in the music and about daring to loose the fear of singing ”wrong” when you improvise, was a great inspiration too.

Here he sings with Voxnorth’s own Anne-Marie Hassing:

Expanding the setlist

In Voxnorth we are constantly trying to figure out ways to improve our performances, not least by discussing the important aspects of a Voxnorth concert. The discussions can take up a lot of time when 11 very different musicians have to agree on a decision. This was the situation at our recent rehearsal camp where we stayed at Musikefterskolen i Humble, a residential music school where singer Morten Mosgaard has his everyday job as a teacher.

One of the things that were discussed was put to a test at the concert we did on the last night of our stay. The idea was to find out whether only 3 singers could do a group improv and still be an act that would suit a Voxnorth concert. The three singers Kristian Skårhøj, Lene Nørgaard and Morten Mosgaard, who all work with vocal improvisation in one way or the other, e.g. in Kristian Skårhøjs improv-group Skrål, were chosen for the task, and here you can see the result for yourself.

The Faroe Islands – Part 2

Our artistic leader Jim Daus Hjernøe was one of the teachers at the choir-course we was a part of at The Faroe Islands. One of the arrangement he taught the big choir was a good old Voxnorth “standard” written by Bobby McFerrin and Roger Treece called “The Garden”. At the concert we gathered all what is Voxnorth with the great choir, combining Natasja and Mads as soloist, Morten and Jesper doing the percussion and Jim leading the whole seen. It was a good round of “wæ-oo” (oo = u).

Here’s a brief look into work and result
