In autumn 2010, Voxnorth toured with the professional lineup for the first time. Here is a brief summary of the tour repertoire, which was a mix of works arranged or composed for the ensemble, and improvisational works.
Aarhus Vocal Festival 2011 saw a career high point for Voxnorth when they appeared on stage with Bobby McFerrin, acting as his vocal backing group. As an introduction to this masterclass Voxnorth performed the choral suite “The Four Loves” – a work composed by Bobby McFerrin’s arranger and producer Roger Treece, who has dedicated it to the ensemble. An essential part of that work is the use of circlesongs and improvised sections.
Besides the performance itself, this video also demonstrates Voxnorth’s own special brand of audience participation in the form a unique solfege improvisation (at about 9 minutes in), where a pair of luminous gloves invites the audience to sing along in the darkened hall.
Voxnorth is constantly trying to push the boundaries of choir music. This comes to show in the different kinds of improvisations that characterize a Voxnorth concert, varying from circlesongs or solfeggi (led by a singer/conductor) to freer, more collective forms such as this trio improvisation.
Another unconventional feature is the very simple (but in every respect effective) arrangement of Lipps Inc’s Funky Town.
In June 2011 Voxnorth’s artistic director Jim Daus Hjernøe stood at the helm of a choir festival in the Faroe Islands. At this occasion Voxnorth performed together with the 150-strong festival choir and also gave concerts of their own around the islands. Watch video.
Sound
An example of an original vocal arrangement is Paul McCartney’s “Mother Nature’s Son”, arranged by Jim Daus Hjernøe. This great song will be brought back into our repertoire in the fall of 2011. Here it can be heard in a studio recording from the Voxnorth album “Essence”.
“Frit Fald” (Free Fall) is composed and arranged by Morten Mosgaard, who also sings the solo part. The work on “Frit Fald” has largely been focused on creating an original and simple arrangement with ample possibility to adapt the song to the atmosphere and space of the concert. To get a sense of this, you can listen to these two very different live recordings from concerts in the Concert Hall Aarhus and Frederick’s Church in Toftum in the Faroe Islands.
